Will a Sea Salt Battery replace Lithium Batteries?

There has been a significant breakthru on Sea Salt Batteries. Yes, you heard that right. Sea Salt! Researchers have built the first Sea Salt Battery that has 4 times the energy storage capacity of lithium batteries. The Sea Salt batteries are also low cost and a more eco friendly option.

Currently, Litium extraction can cause water shortage, biodiversity loss, damage to the ecosystem and soil degradation. At a time, when researchers are saying the need for batteries is going up, a renewable option is desperately needed.

Now Sea Salt batteries are not new, but up until now they have been inferior and with a short storage of energy. This new battery though is different. Scientists have altered the electrodes to improve the reactivity of the sulfur - a key element determining storage capacity.

Scientists are now working on refining this process and making it ready for commercial use. So, unfortunately there is no timeline for when this may happen. But it is exciting to hear that there may be an alternative in the not so far future.

Sustainability is really an evolving science right now and its very exciting to see some of the improvements and eco friendly options coming our way. I can’t wait until I can do another blog post with a date that Sea Salt batteries will be a commercial alternative, so stay tuned!
